Residents of Kaduna State celebrated as the State Government introduced a free transport scheme for civil servants, students, and retirees.
This initiative, part of the Kaduna Subsidized Transport Scheme, aims to provide affordable, inclusive, and environmentally friendly transportation through a fleet of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.
Engr. Inuwa Ibrahim, the Director General of the Kaduna State Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), announced the deployment of this substantial fleet, a scale rarely seen in public transport initiatives at the sub-national level.
The free transport service, which started on July 7, 2025, will be available for 10 working days. Following this period, the general public will pay only 40% of the standard transport costs, marking a significant welfare initiative to keep transportation affordable for everyone.
Engr. Ibrahim underscored the environmental benefits of CNG buses, noting that they reduce carbon emissions and are cheaper to maintain, showcasing climate-conscious leadership in action.
He highlighted that this rollout is the result of buses commissioned by President Tinubu and activated by Governor Uba Sani, demonstrating that true progress requires collaboration across various levels of governance.
“This policy serves as a social safety net, especially for working-class families and students who are facing rising transportation costs,” he remarked.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Kaduna Axis, expressed enthusiasm about this development and commended Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to student welfare.
The Chairman of Kaduna Axis, Comrade Anas Yusuf, stated in an interview with People’s Daily Weekend that this initiative reflects an understanding of the daily struggles students face and a genuine effort to support their academic pursuits.
“Governor Uba Sani’s support for the student community demonstrates responsive leadership and a student-friendly administration.
This initiative will significantly reduce financial pressure on students and enhance access to education within the state. We encourage other state leaders to follow this commendable example and prioritize student welfare in their regions,” Yusuf stated.
“We remain committed to representing and defending the interests of Nigerian students and will continue to engage constructively with all stakeholders to improve the academic environment.”
Similarly, Janet Dickson, a primary school teacher from Mahuta in Chikun Local Government Area, described the initiative as the best development for Kaduna State since the removal of fuel subsidies. She expressed her excitement at being able to access free transportation, stating that it has enabled her to save significantly.
“I used to spend a large portion of my earnings on transportation. With this bus service, I believe I can save more and better support my household,” she said.
Joseph Dauda, a civil servant, praised the timing and potential impact of this intervention. “This is a direct way to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
We hope it continues, as sustainability is a major challenge in our country,” he commented. “I took the free bus from Sabo to town and saved a considerable amount. If this continues, I will be able to save money for other expenses.”
Halima Sani, a student at Kaduna Polytechnic, noted that free transportation has eased her daily commute to school. “Apart from the cost savings, it provides us with a safer and more convenient way to get to campus,” she said.
Pastor Francis Musa from the House of Purpose Ministry in Chikun Local Government Area praised the initiative, calling it people-oriented. However, he urged the government to ensure its sustainability, as it directly affects people’s livelihoods and helps mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.
“We are praying for him and the state for guidance and wisdom as he navigates the affairs of Kaduna State,” he said.
Likewise, Mallam Ibrahim Mohammed from Karaye Mosque in Badarawa, Kaduna North Local Government Area, expressed his excitement about the initiative, stating that it exemplifies good governance and is not mere propaganda. He prayed for Governor Uba Sani, hoping he would make decisions that benefit the masses.
