Ganduje’s protege emerges Kano deputy governor-designate
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has picked Murtala Sule Garo, a protege of Dr Umar Ganduje,
as deputy governor.
A government statement on Tuesday said Garo’s name has been forwarded to the state house of assembly for screening and confirmation.
The position became vacant following the resignation of the erstwhile deputy governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.
The search for a new deputy governor has raised tension among the various political camps in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The names of Garo, backed by former governor Ganduje, and Rabiu Suleiman Bichi backed by Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, and the immediate past Chairman of the state APC, Abdullahi Abbas, featured prominently as contenders for the position.
However, a statement signed by Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf’s chief press secretary, said Garo was selected after wide consultations with key stakeholders.
The 48 year old Murtala Sule Garo is a season political administrator with over two decades of service in both elective and appointed positions.
He has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to Kano State Governor and elected Kabo Local Government Chairman.
Garo also served as Chairman of ALGON in Kano State, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and was the APC deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections.
