Give women justice, fairness, say Fashola, Ajimobi

Date:

From Ayodele Samuel, Lagos

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state and his Oyo state counterpart, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, yesterday said women needed justice and fairness more than allotting political offices to them.

They spoke at the closing ceremony of 14th National Women Conference organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO held in Lagos.

The duo argued that strengthening justice and fairness to defend the women against domestic violence and other abuses were more enduring legacies to the women than the number of offices allotted to them in government.

Fashola lamented that the norm in government cycles these days was to measure government’s commitment to women by the number of offices the administration allotted to them (women).

According to him, “It is a very disturbing claim; because it is now being repeated without response against it. And some people are claiming that their achievement is the appointment of a number of women in certain political offices. That is their claim today.

Ajimobi added that the perennial call for the allotment of 30 per cent of public offices for women undermines the women folks, where they could be as competitive as men for all offices, including that of the presidency.
