GMBNI backs NCFRMI boss, cites three-year milestones

The Grassroots Mobilisers for Better Nigeria Initiative has declared support for the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Dr Aliyu Tijjani Ahmed, as he marks three years in office.

The group made the declaration in Abuja in a statement issued by its media unit, commending Ahmed’s leadership of the commission and his efforts to strengthen migration governance, humanitarian relief and long-term recovery for displaced Nigerians.

The declaration comes as the NCFRMI manages an estimated 6.7 million displaced persons across the country.

Led by its Chairperson, Amb. Dr Fatima Mohammed Goni, GMBNI said Ahmed’s three-year milestone represented a national responsibility to ensure that vulnerable and displaced Nigerians were not left behind.

The group said the commission under Ahmed had shifted attention from emergency relief towards sustainable recovery and self-reliance for displaced families.

GMBNI also praised what it described as the commissioner’s aggressive grassroots engagement, saying it aligned with the organisation’s interventions in food, healthcare and education for vulnerable communities.

The group highlighted the development of specialised resettlement cities as one of the major initiatives under Ahmed’s leadership.

It said the schemes were designed to help families move safely from temporary camps into more sustainable settlements.

GMBNI also commended the decentralisation of the National Migration Policy, which it said had strengthened collaboration between federal authorities and state governments.

The organisation further cited enhanced humanitarian partnerships with international bodies, including the United Nations Refugee Agency and the International Organization for Migration.

While celebrating the achievements, GMBNI called on the Federal Government, state governments and private stakeholders to increase financial and logistical support for the commission.

The group said stronger support was necessary to enable the NCFRMI to expand its humanitarian interventions and respond effectively to the needs of displaced persons.

GMBNI pledged to strengthen its grassroots volunteer efforts in support of the commission.

The organisation said it would continue working with the NCFRMI management to ensure that Ahmed’s humanitarian initiatives reached vulnerable populations across the country.
