Baring any unforseen happening, Kano State Governor, Engr Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) today.
Peoples Daily reports that the Governor had days ago resigned from his party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), putting to rest the long running rumour of his parting ways with the party.
The planned defection was confirmed in a statement issued yesterday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf said his decision to return to the APC was informed by the prevailing realities of governance, national cohesion and development.
The Governor recalled that he was an early member of the APC, having joined the party in 2014 when he emerged as its candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial seat, a position he later conceded to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in the interest of party unity.
After years of political engagement across different platforms, including his recent stint in the NNPP, Governor Yusuf said the APC remained a familiar and more structured platform for progressive governance.
He said rejoining the ruling party would strengthen cooperation between Kano State and the Federal Government.
“Rejoining the APC will further enhance collaboration with the Federal Government, accelerate infrastructural development, improve security coordination and enhance service delivery across Kano State,” the governor said.
He added that the move would also help
consolidate political stability and promote unity within the state.
The statement disclosed that Governor Yusuf will formally register as a member of the APC in Kano on Monday, alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and the 44 local government chairmen in the state.
He is also expected to officially flag off the APC e-registration exercise in Kano State on the same day.
