From Bashir Rabe Mani, Sokoto
Two residents have been killed following an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists on Ungushi village in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Sunday.
The assailants reportedly invaded the community in the morning, surrounding the village and opening fire indiscriminately on residents.
Local vigilantes swiftly mobilized and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted over an hour, successfully repelling the invasion.
The victims were identified as Ali Kaurar Yaku Marshall and Lukman Bawa, a local welder.
During the confrontation, a vigilante member, Mustapha Auwalu, sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg.
He was conveyed to the General Hospital, where medical personnel successfully extracted the bullet.
Community sources claimed that vigilantes neutralized three of the suspected Lakurawa fighters during the exchange of fire.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, stated that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area had reported the attack, adding that full details would be released upon further investigation.
“The incident has been reported by the DPO in the area. We are still awaiting details of the incident as of the time of filing this report,” Rufai said.
The attack has heightened tension across Ungushi and neighboring communities, with residents renewing calls on the federal and state governments to urgently deploy additional security personnel and intensify patrols to forestall further incursions.
