From Yakubu Mustapha, Minna
At least three people were purportedly killed following a violent clash between local vigilantes and aggrieved youth in the Kpakungu area of Minna, the Niger State capital.
The incident reportedly began late Saturday night around 10:00 PM when a team of vigilantes arrived in Kpakungu to arrest suspected miscreants.
During the operation, a vigilante member allegedly shot and killed a youth identified as Aliyu, sparking immediate local protests.
By early Sunday morning, it was gathered that aggrieved youth mobilized and blocked the busy Minna–Bida highway in Chanchaga Local Government Area.
Our correspondent reports that the violence subsequently spread to the nearby Gbeganu community, where rioters attacked residents, leading to the deaths of two more persons.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Niger State Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that tactical teams and patrol units were promptly deployed to the scene.
Abiodun said Police operatives dispersed the rioters, cleared the barricaded highway, and restored calm to the affected communities.
The Police assured that efforts are currently ongoing to apprehend the vigilante member involved in the initial shooting and others linked to the violent outbreak.
