Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi state has set free 146 prisoners, who were convicted of various offences and convicted by courts within the state.
The release of the prisoners’ release whom have been serving in various Prisons across the state was to mark the maiden act of the state advisory council on prerogative of mercy.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for justice, Ibrahim Umar who represented the governor disclosed this yesterday during the occasion and the visit by the prerogative of mercy committee to Bauchi Central Prison.
Mohammed said that on the 21st of June 2016, the governor out of his benevolence, signed for the immediate release of the prison inmates who have qualified based on the recommendations of the advisory council on the prerogative of mercy.
He noted that the governor chose the month of Ramadan to deliver this dividend of democracy, said that all the prisoners released were those sentenced to three years and above, but have only 6 months left to complete their jail term or long term prisoners who have served for more than 10 years and are of good conduct and persons above the age of 60 years.
“The council took time to visit all the operational prisons in Bauchi state which include Ningi, Jama’re, Azare, Misau and Bauchi to ascertain and ensure all due process and compliance with relevant rules” Governor Abubakar said
“The total number of inmates released from the prisons is as follows. 4 prisoners from Ningi prison, 12 from Jama’re, 26 from Misau, 12 from Azare and 92 from Bauchi prisons,” he said
In his remark at the occasion, the Comptroller of Prisons, Bauchi State Command, Alhaji Sidi Muhammed said that the Attorney General of the state upon assumption of duty resuscitated two committee namely, the prerogative of mercy and the administration of criminal justice.
Sidi disclosed that last month, the administration of criminal justice committee went round the prisons in the state and released 78 inmates while prerogative of mercy committee had so far pardoned 146 inmates from prisons across the state.
