The convoy of Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, was shot at by suspected hoodlums on Wednesday, shortly after his visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji.
The governor arrived at the palace around 3:15 p.m. in a convoy of approximately 20 vehicles to present his Certificate of Return to the first-class traditional ruler following his re-election victory at the weekend.
The attack triggered an exchange of gunfire between the assailants and the governor’s security aides, sending residents and traders in the area fleeing for safety.
According to an eyewitness, Governor Adeleke had just concluded his meeting with the monarch and entered his vehicle alongside key aides when heavy gunfire erupted.
The attackers reportedly arrived in an unregistered Toyota Sienna bus via the Ita Olokan axis and positioned themselves in advance.
It was gathered that the gun battle lasted between 12 and 15 minutes.
However, before being repelled, the assailants fired at and damaged the palace’s main gate.
They subsequently engaged the governor’s security team in a second shootout near the Osogbo Central Mosque before fleeing toward Ita Olokan along the Osogbo–Ilesa Road.
The violence caused widespread panic across the area, forcing local business owners to abandon their shops.
Confirming the incident, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, stated that security personnel successfully neutralized the threat with zero casualties recorded.
“They are hoodlums, and the governor’s security repelled them.
“They attacked the governor’s convoy at Ataoja’s palace. No casualty,” Alimi said.
