By Muhammad Maitela, Damaturu

The Yobe State Government has flagged off the 2025 Tree Planting Campaign in Damaturu to combat desertification, restore degraded lands, and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Governor Buni reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the environment and restoring land fertility lost to desert encroachment.
The governor recalled that in 2020, his administration launched the Yobe State Climate Change Action Programme at the Dusuwa Forest Reserve in Fune Local Government Area. “Since then, millions of tree seedlings have been raised and planted across the state to halt the southward movement of the Sahara Desert.
As part of deliberate policies, the state government has established 100 hectares of gum arable plantations in each senatorial district: Dusuwa in Fune, Kalgi in Yunusari, and Karasuwa-Galu in Karasuwa Local Government Area.
Other environmental initiatives introduced by the government include the establishment of the State Climate Change Council to coordinate activities and strengthen collaboration with national and international partners, as well as partnerships with the World Bank and the African Development Bank on projects such as the Agro-Climatic Resilience Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) and the Environmental and Climate Change Action Project (ECCAP).
