Gov. Sanwo-Olu praises organizers of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has lauded the organizers of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, for putting up a spectacular event which he described as more than just a race but a celebration of endurance, determination, and the vibrant spirit of the state.

 Sanwo-Olu who not only witnessed the event but also participated in a fun run commended the resilience and competence displayed by the athletes, organizers, and supporters whom he noted contributed to the success of the marathon.

 “The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is more than a race—it’s a celebration of endurance, determination, and the vibrant spirit of Lagos. Thousands of athletes from across the world took to our streets, proving once again that Lagos is the home of excellence in sports and global events.”

 “Congratulations to all the runners, organizers, and supporters who made this event a success. Lagos continues to set the pace in hosting world-class sporting events. We are building a city where sports, tourism, and opportunities thrive”.

The Lagos City Marathon, which has earned a World Athletics Gold Label status, attracted top athletes from all parts of the world, with intense competition in various categories.

The climax of the event was when Kenya’s Edwin Koch Kibet finished first in the men’s category in a time of 2:14:19:17 to smile home with the cash prize of $50,000 while Nehemiah Kipyegon – 2:16:37:47 and Bernard Cheruiyot – 2:17:17:13 also from Kenya, finished second and third respectively to seal a clean sweep by the East Africans.

Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa won the women’s category and her first ever victory at the Lagos City Marathon.

Nigeria’s best performance was from Nyango Gyang Boyi who made history, finishing the race in the top 10 and most importantly entering a money-winning placement.

Boyi finished in 8th place, clocking a time 2:25:41.58 and will now go home with a prize award of $4,000, in addition to winning the N2 million top prize in the Nigerian category.
