Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state has expressed deep shock and sympathy over the tragic fire incident that destroyed several shops at the popular Kantin Kwari textile market on the night of Saturday.
In a statement released by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, Governor Yusuf extended his sympathies to the affected traders, their families, and the entire people of Kano State over the incident.
He described the incident as a devastating blow to the state’s economic hub and that he shared in the grief of those who lost their sources of livelihood.
The Governor urged traders and market authorities to remain vigilant and strengthen safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
He emphasized the critical need for enhanced precautionary steps to protect both lives and property, stressing that safeguarding the market is essential to ensuring its continued role as a pillar of Kano’s economy.
The fire, which started around 7:00 PM, was said to have began at Gidan Inuwa Mai Mai on Bayajidda Street and quickly spread to several buildings within the market.
However, the quick intervention of the Federal Fire Service, Kano State Fire Service, and additional reinforcements from Sabon Gari, Dawanau, and Singa Markets, helped to the success of containing and preventing further spread.
Governor Yusuf commended the bravery and swift action of the fire services, private companies, and other volunteers involved in battling the blaze.
He called on all market stakeholders to work together in prioritizing safety and implementing necessary measures to avoid a recurrence of such unfortunate events.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to standing with the affected traders during this challenging time and assured them of the government’s support in mitigating the effects of the incident.
