A Nigerian civil society group has publicly withdrawn its earlier allegations of corruption against a senior official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
In a statement released on Friday, Advocate Israel T. Ebiama, the National Coordinator of the United Advocates for Good Governance and Leadership, issued a formal apology to Engr. Adokiye Tombomieye.
The group had on 9 July 2025 accused Tombomieye of corruption and called for an immediate investigation and prosecution.
However, Ebiama admitted that the claims were “premature, unbalanced, and potentially misleading.”
“We now realise that any investigation into corruption allegations should be thorough, impartial, and based on verifiable evidence,” the statement read.
The group also retracted its call on President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to act on the earlier claims.
Ebiama expressed regret over the potential harm the statement might have caused Tombomieye, the NNPCL, and the public.
“We apologise for any inconvenience, distress, or harm our previous statement may have caused. We are sincerely sorry,” he said.
He assured that the group would be more responsible in future communications, pledging to uphold principles of accuracy, fairness, and balance.
