Some unidentified gunmen yesterday invaded Gegu Beki Police Station in Kogi local government area of Kogi state, killing two police officers on duty and a suspect in police cell.
Our reporter reliably gathered that the bandits numbering about five, heavily armed with AK 47 rifles invaded the police station at about 2.15am on Tuesday on motorbikes.
According to the source, immediately they arrived the sleepy community, they opened fire to scare people away and then moved straight into the station and subsequently killed two policemen on duty and injured a suspect in custody.
It was further gathered that the bandits made away with the AK 47 rifles of the slain policemen, even as they equally ransacked the entire station for more guns and ammunitions before leaving the town.
The source further added that the operation lasted for about 30 minutes as the bandits took their time to operate freely due to lack of power during the attack.
Motorists travelling along the highway during that hour quickly made U-turn when they heard about the incident.
The spokesman of the Kogi State Police Command, Mr. William Aya confirmed the attack when contacted over the matter.
According to him, two Police officers were killed by the bandits while a suspect in custody was injured.
He said that, the Police Command has commenced investigation with a view to unravelling the motive of the attack.
Meanwhile corpses of the two police officers have been deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja by the officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission while the injured suspect is also receiving treatment in the same hospital.
