Gwagwalada Council moves to revive inter-school sports

In a major bid to restore grassroots talent discovery, the Gwagwalada Area Council under the leadership of Executive Chairman, Hon. Kasim Mohammed, has unveiled plans to reactivate inter-school sports competitions across the area council after years of neglect.

The Special Adviser to the Chairman on Sports and Recreational Development, Barr. Babatunde Akintade, disclosed this during the grand finale of a 32-team football tournament organized to mark the Chairman’s first 100 days in office.

Akintade, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the Gwagwalada Football Council and a board member of the FCT Football Association, emphasized that bringing back inter-school sports is central to rebuilding the area’s sports ecosystem.

He added that alongside reviving school competitions, the administration is also preparing to host a major volleyball tournament for local youth later this year.

“The primary purpose of these initiatives is to revive grassroots sports, uncover raw talent, and give our young people a structured platform to excel,” Akintade stated.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to youth development, he urged young residents to stay united and resilient.

“If you do not win today, you will emerge victorious tomorrow,” he told the participants, assuring residents that his council will continue to launch people-oriented programs and deliver impactful development projects across Gwagwalada.

Former Council Chairman, Hon. Adamu Mustapha Danze, commended the administration for restoring school-level and grassroots sports, describing athletic engagement as a proven vehicle for peace, employment, and social unity.

The 100-day celebration tournament concluded with Sheikh Hamdan FC defeating Anagada United 1–0 in the final match, securing the top trophy along with a N500,000 cash prize from the Executive Chairman, while the runners-up received N300,000.
