The President of United Church of Christ in all Nations UCCN also known as HEKAN Church. Rev. Amos Kiri has expressed dismay over proliferation of arms and ammunition in Nigeria, saying it has become a serious challenge in the country.
He stated this in his state of the Nation at the church during the partial lockdown address in kaduna yesterday.
According to him, unauthorized purchase and acquisition of deadly arms is no more a secret and those that are not authorized to own arms are the ones today holding and parading sophisticated arms at will.
Rev Kiri explained that the arms are used to kill Nigerians, loot their properties and burn their houses.
He added that a number of widows, orphans, displaced communities and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) kept increasing on a daily basis.
“ Rape cases of children and women is completely unacceptable and unbefitting of a God fearing nation, whatever can be done through legislation would have to be done to maintain the sanctity of our women and children.
“ Each time I remember and reflect on the evil being perpetrated in our country especially on the innocent and less privileged, the vulnerable; I weep for my dear country, Nigeria.
“The present government may appear to be doing its best to stop these unfortunate situations but it is never enough.
“ I wish to say that there is more to be done by the security agencies and the Government of the day.
“ There is the need for synergy, and the need to work and improve on intelligence gathering and sharing by relevant institutions. Government needs not to be reminded that its primary responsibility is the security and welfare of its citizens; every single life of Nigerian is sacred and must be preserved.
“ I urge the government to double its efforts in protecting Nigerians from these hoodlums and blood thirsty individuals.
“If only the effort invested in the fight against COVID-19 could be replicated in the fight against insecurity; Nigeria will be a safe place for every one of us.
“ We join other Nigerians, especially the national assembly, to call on Mr. President to address the security architecture of our dear nation.
“ Let other experience officers with new ideas be allowed to saddle the leadership of our nation’s security.”
