Hike in fuel prices, a global phenomenon — RETAN President
By Jude Opara, Abuja
As Nigerians continue to groan under the impact of the hike in prices of petroleum resources, the National President of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria ( RETAN), Alhaji Musa Muhammadu Maitakobi has urged Nigerians to remain calm.
He explained that the rise in fuel prices is not peculiar to Nigeria, but a global phenomenon.
Maitakobi spoke in Abuja on Thursday when he paid a courtesy visit on the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda at the National Secretariait of the party.in Abuja.
According to him, what is required is for people to pray for an end to the ongoing crisis that has affected the fuel supply chain globally.
“This is not a problem of Nigeria, it is a world problem, and you and I can only go for prayers. God Almighty should stop what is happening so that the price will go down”.
The RETAN boss argued that fuel dealers are only responding to the dictates of the energy market.
“You don’t expect that somebody went out as a businessman, bought something at 10 Naira and expect him to come and sell it at nine Naira. Automatically, the price will go up, because he cannot subsidise what he did not buy in that range.
“What we used to do, based on your question, to bring down the price is instead of us to gain 10 Naira, we gain five Naira so that we can assist customers.
“My advice to Nigerians is that we should have the fear of God, so that we can be able to do something that we can defend before God Almighty.
“If you got something at a cheap price, you too should sell it at a cheap price. If you get it even in high price, try to minimise the gain so that the price will come down.”
On his visit to the APC secretariat, the RETAN leader said as a party chieftain, he was there to interface with the leadership to know how his group can help the party win the forthcoming 2027 elections.
Maitakobi expressed confidence that given the achievements of President Bola Tinubu, he deserves to be reelected in the 2027 presidential election.
