From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi
A Magistrate Court sitting in Makurdi and presided over by Mrs. Igyama A. R. has denied bail to a serving councilor, James Aondover Semali and five (5) others for their alleged killing of a 45 year old man, Michael Iormbaamo Iorchir of Dzev Kindred in Shangev-Ya District, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.
The other five accused denied bail in the case are, a former Supervisory Councilor in the local council, Mr. Akuha Shimaibo, Terzungwe Bem, Terwase Aloho, Tersoor Dura, and Asom Tyongi, all of Mbakyaa kindred in Shangev-ya district of the local government.
It could be recalled that the accused persons had on the 14th of June, 2017 invaded the deceased resident, forcefully abducted him, heinously killed and abandoned his dead body in the bush close to their area.
Angered by this development, the younger brother of the deceased, Aondowase Iorchir on the 19th of June, 2017 reported the matter to the Police Zonal Command, Gboko, who swung into action and arrested the suspects.
But, ruling on the motions for bail in respect of the six accused, the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Igyama A.R. told their counsels that the court lack jurisdiction to grant his clients ball since it is a case of culpable homicide and capital offense in nature.
Mrs. Igyama added that after all, a statement of eye witness account has been placed before court to persuade her to refuse the application for bail in the interest of justice.
