The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the recent approval of a 50% hike in telecom tariffs, calling it an “economic assault” and a deliberate attempt to stifle freedom of expression.
The increase, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on January 20, follows requests from major telecommunications operators for higher tariffs, with MTN Nigeria initially seeking a 100% hike.
However, the NCC capped the increase at 50%, which will take effect in February 2025.
HURIWA, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, argued that the hike disproportionately impacts young Nigerians who rely on affordable internet and communication services for participation in national discourse.
“This tariff increase is a calculated attempt to silence the voices of young Nigerians and undermine their ability to engage in civic activities,” Onwubiko stated.
The organization further criticized the hike as one of the highest globally, labeling it a direct attack on the fundamental rights of citizens.
HURIWA also drew a parallel between the current policy and previous government actions aimed at suppressing freedom of expression, particularly during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The group warned that the policy would limit access to critical digital tools, such as social media and online platforms, which are essential for advocacy, education, and engagement.
It expressed concern that the hike would particularly affect unemployed and disadvantaged Nigerians who cannot afford high data costs, thereby cutting off large segments of the population from digital communication.
HURIWA also highlighted the adverse effects of the tariff hike on essential services, including healthcare and education.
It noted that many elderly citizens in rural areas rely on affordable telecommunication services to communicate health issues with family members, while students depend on affordable internet access for research.
In response, HURIWA has called for peaceful protests and constitutional actions against the policy, which it regards as an attack on the Nigerian Constitution.
The group also called for the dismissal of the Minister of Communications, Dr. Bosun Tijani, accusing him of championing policies detrimental to the welfare of Nigerians.
“If President Tinubu fails to act, his government risks being remembered for enslaving its people with oppressive policies,” HURIWA warned, urging immediate reversal of the tariff hike.
