…says he’ll decide fate of repentant terrorists soon

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday vowed that he will not leave government at the end of his eight years tenure as a failure.
Accordingly, he charged the security agencies in the country to turn around the security situation, away from its present unsatisfactory state.
National Security Adviser, Babagana Mungono disclosed this after the President met with the security chiefs at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Munguno noted that the President iBuhari was quite happy that there had been tremendous successes recorded in recent times by the security agencies, leading to the surrender by some terrorists.
According to him, large numbers of people are surrendering in the northeast as a consequence of the relentless efforts of the Armed Forces, intelligence, and security agencies.
He said: “And he’s also made it very, very clear that he’s not ready to exit government as a failure. He is not going to tolerate that; he’s made changes and he is ready to make further changes if he is not satisfied.
“He is completely determined to ensure that there’s a turnaround in the fortunes in the theatre of operations.”
Mungonu also announced that the President will make his plans concerning the last batch of repentant terrorists known soon
“Yes, there are plans. But I don’t want to immediately divulge what has been decided on those plans till the President takes a firm decision on the plans.
“But that is one of the things that he intends to address, the number of people coming. And it’s not just in Nigeria, even in northern Cameroon, you have equally large numbers of people, you know, surrendering to the bonafide agencies of government.
“But that is all as a consequence of the regional cooperation between the various countries and the agencies of those countries, ” he added.
He also stated that the president will address the prevailing hunger in the country.
According to him, the President is not oblivious of the pains of the people, and is working with the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and other members of the council to address the issue.
The NSA also stated that there has seen a significant drop in the number of incidents of kidnapping and banditry in the northwest.
He, however, said a lot more needs to be done to rid the northern region of insecurity.
“So the President is also aware of that. And he has also made certain assertions which I’m not willing to say right now, till you know, he’s made the final decision on those things.
“But generally, the atmosphere is improving, especially in the northeastern part of the country. The President is very, very happy with the drive-in that part of the country, he stated.
On the recent killings in Plateau he said: “We also address the issue in Plateau the recent killings, and the President has given certain directives to address that. He’s also expressed confidence in the efforts of the Governor of plateau State,” to handle the precarious security situation.
