Former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) has advised Nigerians to go and register for their National Identification Number (NIN).
A statement issued yesterday by the Director Media of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Okwudiafor Anthony, said Babangida gave the advice after being enrolled for his NIN at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) enrolment centre.
He noted that the present National Identity Management System (NIMS) is entirely different from mere issuance of photo card, saying that the present system will take Nigerians to a greater height.
The former military ruler, who was accompanied by a former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Air Vice-Marshal Hamza Abdullahi (rtd) further advised the NIMC to constantly upgrade and sustain the system, in order to help the country in its planning activities, reduction of crimes and ghost identities in the country.
On his part, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, who personally presented the NIN slip to both Gen. Babangida and the former Minister of FCT, also called on Nigerians and legal residents to obtain their NIN, which he said will enhance the work of the law enforcement agencies and help the government in their national planning.
