The Ibom Youths Alliance for Peoples Democratic Party (IYAPDP) has commended the national leadership of the PDP for dissolving the Aniekan Akpan-led Akwa Ibom State chapter’s working committee.
The group, in a statement by its National Coordinator, David Effiong, described the action of the Amb. Iliya Damagum-led PDP National Working Committee (NWC) as “a stich in time that saved nine,” saying that but for the swift action of the national body, the PDP would have been pushed down the cliff of Akwa Ibom State politics.
IYAPDP stressed that the decision of the Aniekan Akpan-led Party Exco to sell the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was disgraceful, heart wrenching, and an unpardonable betrayal of the trust reposed on him by the PDP.
According to the IYAPDP, “It is strange that a body charged with the duty of managing our party in Akwa Ibom can willfully betray the party after failing to call any forms of meeting for the party in almost a year.
“Is it not reprehensible that Akpan, who had the onerous responsibility of leading the party, abandoned it midstream, only to now seek to thwart the genuine efforts of the leadership at the national level to rebuild.
“How can a responsible state party chairman join forces with those who want to further divide the party? That is unthinkable, inexcusable, completely intolerable and must not be allowed under any guise whatsoever”, it said.
The group commended the NWC for upholding the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP especially Section 10 (6) which expressly bars members of the PDP from aligning with any other political party at any level adding that such a decision will further instill discipline and loyalty among party members.
The IYAPDP pledged support and loyalty to the newly appointed Igwat Umoren-led Akwa Ibom State Caretaker Committee, urging the committee to take necessary urgent action to further unite and strengthen the PDP in the state.
The group said the PDP remains the leading party in the state, still commanding the loyalty, support, and solidarity of the majority of the people of Akwa Ibom State.
