In a high-level assessment mission aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s border security, a delegation led by Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) M.T. Umar of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), who represented the Comptroller General Kemi Nanna Nandap, paid a working visit to the border communities of Jibia, Kongolam, Babban Mutum and other key areas along the Nigeria-Niger border.
The visit, which included representatives from an international private security who specialises in border management, focused on evaluating the current efforts to combat insecurity, illegal migration, and transnational crimes.
Mr. Siarhei Pakrava, representing COPS Defence Ltd., a private security consultancy, noted the alarming scope of illicit border activities and called for greater investment in surveillance infrastructure. “These routes are being exploited by criminals and smugglers. We need a stronger fusion of intelligence gathering and border technology,” he said.
Also present was Ambassador Hussaini Coomassie of the International Commission for Peace and Good Governance, who stressed the importance of regional cooperation. “Peace and stability can not be achieved in isolation. Nigeria must lead collaborative efforts with its neighbours to dismantle the networks threatening our national security,” he stated.
DCG M.T. Umar, who led the NIS delegation, highlighted the on-ground realities faced by officers. “Our personnel are doing their best under very difficult circumstances. With better logistics, modern surveillance tools, and community support, we can secure our borders more effectively,” he said.
The visit provided firsthand insight into the complex terrain and human challenges faced at the frontlines of Nigeria’s border management. The officials observed ongoing patrol operations, met with local stakeholders, and reviewed infrastructure meant to curb illegal crossings and the movement of criminal elements.
