INEC can’t guarantee peaceful elections in 2015 – Jega

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it cannot guarantee peaceful conduct of elections in the 2015 general elections.

The INEC longest serving National Commissioner, Ismail Igbani, who represented the INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, during a meeting with civil society groups in Abuja, said the commission can only try to prevent violence in the forth coming general election.

“We can’t tell you with certainty that there will be violence free election in 2015, but we can only try to prevent it”, Ismail said.

He said there are some security agencies like the civil defence, the police and the military whose role is to ensure that there is violence free elections in 2015.

He added that what the commission is doing is to work together with them and depend on them for security in the election.

In there reactions after the meeting, some of the participants called on politicians to avoid statements capable of igniting violence in the election.

They urged them to play the game of politics with decency and in accordance with the rules, suggesting that alternative policies should be provided by those who want to rule the country so as to gather popularity for themselves.
