The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Zamfara state yesterday has announced its resolution for the creation of 1163 additional polling units making it a total of 3,679 across the 14 local government areas of the state.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Jibril Ibrahim Zarewa, yesterday informed about the commission’s resolution during the inauguration ceremony of the ad-hoc committee on the review, relocation and creation of new polling units in the state for the conduct of the forthcoming general elections.

Zarewa disclosed that the development is in line with the resolution made by the commission at the federal level for the creation of 30,000 more polling units which would bring the total number to 150,000 as against the 120,000 operated for the conduct of the 2011 general elections across the nation.

The REC further warned that the newly created polling units should be located at public places such as tertiary institutions, secondary schools or colleges, primary schools and recreation centres or parks.

0thers include training centres, libraries and post offices as well as community halls.

Zarewa described the development as a positive step to disallow setting up polling units in places like places of worship, in front of traditional ruler’s buildings or premises, private residences and public buildings that were marked for demolition.

The ad-hoc committee would be chaired by Ahmed H. Zogirma while Luka Gaiya, Muleng Gomwalk would serve as the Training Officer and Legal Officer respectively.
