INEC may bar voters in Nasarawa central bye-election – REC says

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the state Assembly Nasarawa central bye-election will be based on COVID- 19 guidelines.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC in the state, Uthman Ajidagba, stated this on Wednesday during a meeting with critical stakeholders in the electoral process in Lafia, the state capital.

He also said eligible voters who do not comply with COVID-19 protocols would be barred from participating in the forthcoming Nasarawa central state constituency by- election.

Ajidagba said INEC had put in place precautionary measures such as provision of alcohol based hand sanitizers, infrared thermometers, hand washing facilities in all the polling centres during the election.

He stated that the by- election would be a pilot test for INEC amidst the pandemic.

The INEC REC then solicited co-operation of the stakeholders to ensure success in the election.

According to him, the commission is in partnership with security agencies, political parties, and that other stakeholders would work together to ensure a free, fair, credible and acceptable election.

State commissioner of Police Mr. Bola Longe said police and other security personnel would be deployed across Nasarawa central to stop the activities of political thugs and their sponsors.

He warned them to stay clear as the police would deal decisively with any attempt to disrupt the exercise.

The by- election in Nasarawa central state constituency of Nasarawa state House of Assembly which is scheduled for August 8, 2020 was to fill the vacancy created as a result of the death of the member representing the area Suleiman Adamu.
