In order to find solution to the lingering insecurity threatening the corporate existence of Nigeria, due to the activities of insurgents in the country, the newly elected chairman of the National Advisory Council for Support Groups in Nigeria (NACOSUG), Chief Perry Opara, has urged the federal government and Nigerians to unite against the scourge, irrespective of political or religious affiliation.
He said all stakeholders should come together to discover where things went wrong in respect to national security.
This call is coming as Nigeria celebrated 15 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, last week.
Okpara, who is also a member of the Board of National Directorate of Employment (NDE) made this known while delivering a lecture titled: ‘Ethical Standard and Peaceful Conduct in a Democratic Process’, at a workshop organised by the International Conference Limited For Support Groups in Nigeria.
According to him, many Nigerians may be disappointed with the present state of the nation as Nigeria completed 15 years in democracy, but Nigeria election process is changing for the better, and the government is gradually getting things right, but more need to be done.
“Our democratic experience has improved, although we have not made a distinction. I think we have to come together and look inward to correct our mistakes. The greatest challenge we have in 2014 year is to look at security.
“What are those things we did not do right, so that we can do them better, so that insecurity would be a thing of the past in Nigeria. Nigerians should not dispel, they should remain focus and resolute and believe in Nigeria, and I assure you that we will get it right,” he said.
Similarly, Senior Special Adviser on Ethics and Values to President Goodluck Jonathan, Mrs. Stella Jibril, who was also present at the workshop, said despite the numerous challenges in the country, Nigeria is still one, adding that she believed that with ethical political leaders, Nigeria would be better.
“That is why I said that Nigerians are teachable; we are changeable, developable, and transformable, which means changing from the bad to good; and that is repentance. We are ready to change from electoral mediocrity to perfect electoral process,” she said.
