In the wake of spike in security challenges, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, today presided over an Expanded Security Committee meeting of the FCTA, aimed at curtailing the situation in the FCT.
The meeting has in attendance the Minister of State FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, top FCTA officials, heads of Security Agencies, Area Council Chairmen, traditional rulers and religious leaders.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the FCT Commissioner of Police (CP), Miller Dantawaye, noted that highlights of the meeting are basically the activation of Operation Sweep that was relaunched, which is mostly done towards the end of the year.
He explained that the Operation kick-started with creation of four major sectors, which include the Gwagwalada Sector, the Bwari Sector, and two sectors of domiciled within the city centre, to capture everywhere within the city, including Berger, Wuse, and will extend up to Karu, Mararaba, Karshi and Orozo.
Stressing that the essence of the intervention is to ensure that crime doesn’t come close to FCT, the CP said various security agencies including the police, the military, NSCDC, DSS, federal road safety, immigration, correctional service, especially the security agencies under the control of the FCT, came together and decided to commence the Operation Sweep.
“The FCT Minister, His Excellency Nyesom Wike in his wisdom, has provided adequate logistics for that operation, and it has been kick-started.
“It is going to border on so many crimes and criminalities that we see popping up their ugly heads within or around the FCT.
“We have activated, through this operation, serious and very robust interaction with schools, gathering as much intelligence as we can get.
“And we have also tried our best to patrol, and we have commenced in earnest the deployment of heavy logistics around the locations, especially around the fringes, where it is most likely that anyone that wants to perpetrate that level of crime will want to attempt. So schools are being patrolled, schools are being profiled, and schools are being well secured. We’re building confidence in them
“We want to appeal to residents of FCT to know that we’re on top of our game, and we’ll continue to do our best, and we have requisite support from the FCT administration and our bosses at our headquarters.
“ We have deployed massively, even for church and mosque operations, functions, we have deployed adequately.
“So, our Christian brothers, our Muslim brothers should go about carrying out their religious functions, because on Fridays, we are going to secure almost all, if not all, the mosques. And on Sundays we will do the same for the churches.
“All we appeal for residents of FCT is to trust us with intelligence, with information. If you come across anything, please say it.”
