To mark the 2024 International Day of the Girl-Child, Ambassador Mrs. Ogochuku Okekpolo, UN Special Envoy and Pioneer Director, International Forum for Women in Energy, Oil and Gas, Delta State Chapter, has shared her insights on the potential of a future led by empowered girls.
Okekpolo made this known during a media briefing with journalists in Warri.
She noted that this year’s theme, ‘Girls’ Vision for the Future,’ bears special significance in Nigeria where societal, economic, and cultural barriers frequently hinder girls’ aspirations.
She observed that Nigeria’s young girls possess vast untapped potential, yet they face an ongoing struggle for basic rights, education, freedom from early marriage, and protection from violence, and despite these challenges, they consistently demonstrate remarkable resilience and vision.
Highlighting education as the cornerstone of girls’ empowerment, Ambassador Ogochuku reiterated that girls’ education has a profound impact on community development, fostering a culture of inclusivity, creativity, and sustainable progress.
She emphasized that educated girls have lower rates of early marriage, healthier families, and enhanced community involvement, underscoring Nigeria’s persistent gender disparities in education, where girls’ access remains a pressing concern.
In her view, girls today represent the next generation of leaders, equipped to tackle pressing issues such as climate resilience, economic equality, and international peace. “We must establish avenues for their participation in decision-making processes, nurture their leadership potential, and eliminate the cultural and societal obstacles that have traditionally impeded their advancement”, she said.
In her concluding remarks, she appealed to parents and the wider community to tackle societal norms and stereotypes that restrict girls’ potential, emphasizing the essential contributions of parents, educators, community leaders, and policymakers in establishing an environment conducive to girls’ growth and success.

We should endeavor to build a future where girls can aspire without constraints, envisioning futures characterized by limitless opportunities, attainment, and leadership, she maintained.
