From Gambo Ahmed, Lafia
Nasarawa state commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development Hajiya A’isha Ibrahim has appealed to government at all levels to invest in women and girls, in order to enhance their progress, through greater inclusion, recognition and appreciation of their roles as important members of the society.
This, Ibrahim said will lead to the elimination of the stereotypes and barriers that tend to hinder the development of women around the world.
She stated this Friday at an event organised to celebrate the 2024 international Women’s Day with the theme: “Accelerating Gender Equality through Economic Empowerment “, at Lafia, the state capital.
She said: “The important role of women and their contribution to the stability, growth, development and continuity of the human race cannot be overstressed.
“Women have shown remarkable capacity and resilience in the social, economic and indeed political transformations and well-being of their societies and families yet they are largely discriminated against and suffer many kinds of inhuman and degrading conditions on account of some cultural , religious, social and political stereotypes and beliefs.”
The commissioner added that, the discriminatory practices against women which have been entrenched in the Nigeria socio-economic and political structure and system over the years do not make room for equitable participation of women especially in political and economic activities as well as called for a change in the system and the need for a deliberate approach to reduce the widening gender gap inorder to achieve development and inclusive governance inline with the sustainable development Goals.
She however, lauded Governor Abdullahi Sule for his passion and concern for women’s empowerment and development as well as providing an enabling environment where women have been trained and empowered through the skills acquisition in the area of fishery, animal husbandry, detergent, soap production and bakery amongst others.
“The ministry of women Affairs is in discussion with the wing commander Abdullahi Ibrahim Vocational and Relevant Technology Institute,Lafia, to train and empower more women in the state “, he added.
