Six men, charged with theft of an Acura jeep, were recently granted bail in the sum of N300,000 each by a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja.
They are Mustapha Abbas, 33, (electrician); Ahmed Oladipo,35, (mechanic); Abdulajajih Ademola, (mechanic), as well as Emeka Onoja, 34; Onyebuchi Onoja, 27, and Christian Onoja, who are traders.
Senior Magistrate Mohammed Anka granted the bail with two sureties each in like sum to the accused who were arraigned on July 11 and ordered to be remanded in prison custody.
Admitting the accused, who all residents of the FCT, to bail on Monday, the senior magistrate ordered that the two sureties must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.
He said one of the sureties must be a civil servant not below GL 10 in the Federal Civil Service while the other should be a businessman.
Anka said the sureties and the accused persons must deposit their passport photographs with the court’s registry and adjourned the case until Aug. 13 for hearing.
Earlier, Mr Ojo Olu Kayode, the counsel to Abbas, Oladipo, and Ademola, applied for their bail under section 36 (5) of the 1999 constitution which presumes an accused innocent until otherwise proven.
He argued that the accused are responsible family men with children and would not jump bail.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Francis Tanko, told the court on July 3 that Tajudeen Ahmed of Flat 5, Kigonna street, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, reported the six accused at the Wuse Zone 3 police station.
He said sometime in June, an Acura Jeep MDX with registration number GW 803 ABC was given to Abbas (first accused) to sell for N1.5 million.
The prosecutor alleged that Abbas formed a common intention with the other accused persons at the shop of Emeka Onoja at Wuse Market to dishonestly steal the jeep.
According to the prosecutor, the accused persons stole the jeep and handed the keys to one Timothy Imeh, of no fixed address, who is now at large.
Tanko said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 79, 312, and 322 of the Penal Code.
The six accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. (NAN)
