June 12: Democracy must deliver security, prosperity, hope for Nigerians– Sokoto ADC governorship candidate
From Bashir Rabe Mani in Sokoto
The Governorship Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day, calling for renewed commitment to the ideals of democratic governance, accountability, security, and people-centred development.
This was contained in a statement issued on Friday in Sokoto by his spokesperson, Aminu Abdullahi Abubakar, to commemorate the 27th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria.
In the statement, Dan’iya noted that June 12 remains a significant milestone in the nation’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for democratic governance and civil liberties.
According to him, democracy is not merely about periodic elections but improving the welfare of citizens, protecting lives and property, strengthening institutions, and creating opportunities for sustainable development.
“June 12 represents the triumph of the people’s will and the resilience of Nigerians in the pursuit of democratic governance. It is a day that reminds us that government exists to serve the people and improve their quality of life,” he stated.
The ADC gubernatorial candidate, however, expressed concern over the socio-economic and security challenges confronting many Nigerians, including rising living costs, inflationary pressures, insecurity, unemployment, and declining purchasing power.
He observed that while Nigeria has recorded notable achievements since the return to democratic rule in 1999, many citizens continue to expect greater dividends of democracy in areas that directly affect their daily lives.
“Twenty-seven years of democratic governance should translate into greater security, economic opportunities, quality education, accessible healthcare, and improved living standards for the people. Democracy must be measured by its impact on ordinary citizens,” he said.
Dan’iya stressed that the current challenges facing the country require visionary leadership, inclusive governance, and policies that place the welfare of citizens at the centre of national development.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to democratic values, peaceful political participation, and constructive engagement in the nation’s governance process.
“The power of democracy ultimately resides with the people. Every citizen has a responsibility to participate actively and peacefully in shaping the future of our nation through legitimate democratic processes,” he added.
The ADC candidate also encouraged eligible Nigerians, particularly young people, to obtain and safeguard their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing the ballot as the most powerful instrument for democratic change and accountability.
He urged prospective voters to take advantage of voter registration opportunities and ensure they are prepared to participate fully in future electoral processes.
“Democracy thrives when citizens participate. The PVC remains a lawful and peaceful instrument through which Nigerians can express their choices and hold leaders accountable. Every eligible voter should ensure they are properly registered and ready to exercise this constitutional right,” he said.
Dan’iya reaffirmed the commitment of the African Democratic Congress to promoting good governance, transparency, security, economic growth, and inclusive development across Nigeria.
He congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day and expressed optimism that, through unity, responsible leadership, and collective effort, the country can overcome its present challenges and build a more prosperous future for all.
