Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC In Benue State in 2019 Barr. Emmanuel Jime has stressed that the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day proves that the will of a people cannot be stifled no matter how long it takes.
Jime who stated this in a statement he signed and made available to Peoplesdaily yesterday, noted that those who stifle the will of people, embark on a vain and futile course that confines them to the dark side of history, while those who put themselves forward as a force for good always triumph.
He recalled that twenty-six years ago, Nigerians trooped out in their numbers to vote in an election that displayed a strong resolve to return the country to democracy adding that for those who participated in this process, June 12 was an opportunity to speak in a loud, clear voice that long years of military rule, had to make way for leadership by choice.
“On June 12, 1993 neither ethnicity, religion or other primordial sentiments counted as much as the burning desire in Nigerians to own the process of selecting their leaders. Buoyed by this, a clear majority of the electorate voted for Chief MKO Abiola in what is adjudged the freest election in Nigeria’s history.
“Sadly, that mandate would be annulled by the military in the most brazen manner, with a list of dubious excuses. Chief Abiola rightly put up a fight in defence of our rights, even paying the ultimate price for our wishes to be respected.
“This day marks a rebirth and a proof that the collective will of a people, no matter how long it is delayed, can not be truncated.
“Today (June 12) is proof Abiola’s victory was merely delayed. Poo That our country is united in recognising this day is a testament to Abiola’s sacrifice for the democracy we now enjoy. His struggle against military dictatorship was not just about occupying an office he was entitled to by the mandate of Nigerians, but ensuring that the decision of voters is respected.
He urged Benue people to draw inspiration from Chief Abiola’s recognition long after his deatb, that whatever has been stolen from them, will surely be recovered and restored, no matter how long it may takes.
“Let us in the spirit of June 12, rededicate ourselves to the virtues of peace, justice; sacrifice and nation building. Let’s shun desperation and acts that threaten our unity as a people. “One thing June 12 tells us is yesterday’s injustice will certainly give way for justice”, Jime emphasized.
