Just In: Reps in Disarray as State Police Bill Passes with 289 Votes

Date:

A rowdy session erupted in the House of Representatives on Thursday during deliberations on constitutional amendment bills, as lawmakers were disarray over the procedure for considering the proposed State Police Bill.
The tension began when Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, explained that lawmakers would focus primarily on the State Police Bill among 11 other constitutional amendment proposals contained in the report before the chamber.
However, the approach drew sharp objections from Zubairu Bashir Usman, who argued that members had not been given sufficient time to study the report and understand the changes introduced by the Constitution Review Committee.
Usman insisted that the State Police Bill was a sensitive national issue that required thorough scrutiny and adequate debate before any decision could be taken.
His intervention triggered heated exchanges among lawmakers, with members shouting across the chamber.
The situation escalated further as the Speaker threatened to take disciplinary action against him, briefly throwing proceedings into disarray.
Despite the disruption, the House leadership restored order and proceeded with consideration of the constitutional amendment bills.
At the end of the exercise, 289 lawmakers voted in favour of the State Police Bill, while one voted against it.
The bill was subsequently passed by the House, marking a major step in the ongoing effort to amend the Constitution and establish state police across the country.
