Kaduna coalition accuses El-Rufai of dodging probe

A coalition, Kaduna Voices United, on Sunday took a swipe at former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of attempting to evade accountability over alleged corruption during his tenure.

The group said the ex-governor’s recent comments were diversionary and aimed at shifting public attention from weighty allegations hanging over him.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Yariok Makama Goje, and Secretary, Sunusi Tanimu, the coalition alleged that rather than responding directly to corruption claims, El-Rufai chose to blame the National Security Adviser and security agencies.

The coalition described his administration as one marked by disregard for due process and fundamental human rights, alleging that properties were demolished without fair compensation and workers sacked indiscriminately.

It said, “These actions were not mere administrative decisions but signs of a regime that operated outside the bounds of legality and ethical governance.”

The group also faulted El-Rufai’s claim that the Department of State Services attempted to detain him without due procedure, insisting that accountability must not be selective.

“Accountability is a two-way street. If El-Rufai wishes to challenge the actions of security agencies, he must first address the corruption allegations against him,” the statement read.

The coalition further expressed concern over the intervention of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who reportedly defended El-Rufai over an alleged airport incident.

It said Atiku’s stance raised questions about his commitment to the rule of law and warned against what it termed selective appeals to due process.

According to the group, it was hypocritical for any leader to defend a figure accused of undermining legal protocols while in office, only to invoke the same legal protections when confronted with allegations.

The coalition called on relevant authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the corruption claims against El-Rufai.

It added that no public official, regardless of status, should be shielded from scrutiny.

The group also urged Kaduna residents to remain vigilant and actively demand transparency, accountability and good governance.

“The culture of impunity must end,” it stated, insisting that the people of Kaduna deserve justice and ethical leadership.
