Kaduna govt declares state of emergency on malnutrition

Kaduna State Government has declared a state of emergency on malnutrition in the state, to salvage thousands of its citizens who are victims of the hazard.
The wife of the state Governor, Hajiya Aisha Ummi El-Rufai, disclosed this during a sensitization workshop on the fight against malnutrition for journalists in Zaria yesterday.
Mrs. Ummi El-Rufai said that the role of journalists in dissemination of appropriate information that could boost nutritional activities as well as improved positive nutritional practices in the communities cannot be underestimated.
The Kaduna First Lady who is the Chairperson, Kaduna State Emergency Action Plan (KADENAP), added that the statistics of malnourished children in Nigeria with Kaduna having a high share is worrisome.
Speaking earlier, the Project Manager of KADENAP, Alhaji Shehu Mohammed applauded the State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai for his concern towards malnutrition in the state.
In her lecture, Kaduna State Nutrition l Officer, Hauwa Usman, disclosed that the state recorded 17,989 cases of severe acute malnutrition in 2017; saying 11,324 have been cured.
Hauwa Usman who is from the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SPHCDA), revealed that malnutrition accounts for 50 per cent of deaths of under five children in the state.
Similarly, a lecturer from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Kaduna Polytechnic, Safiya Aliyu Tijjani said women should be empowered because when they have control over resources, they make better provisions for the children.
