Kaduna: INEC shifts voter registration to December

Date:

From Femi Oyelola

Technical and logistic problems yesterday forced the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the distribution of Permanent Voters Card (PVC) to December 6th – 8, 2014, while the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise is now to take place from the 10th -15th December, 2014, contrary to earlier schedule date November 28, 2014.

The National Commissioner,  Dr. Chris Iyimoga who is in charge of the zone, disclosed this in Kaduna after a meeting with stakeholders and political parties in the state.

He gave technical, logistic problems as the major reason for the postponement and appealed to stakeholders, political parties to bear with the Commission.

“The distribution of the PVC will now hold from the 6th – 8th December, 2014 while the Continuous Voters Registration exercise will be from the 10th – 15th December, 2014.”

“Some of the problems we have are technical and logistic problems and we apologize in that regard and appeal for your understanding,” he said.

Stakeholders at the meeting, who accepted the appeal of the Commission, however expressed reservations and hoped that there will not be any other reason for another postponement, warning that they’re watching and will not tolerate any foul play.

Some stakeholders further said, they hoped that the postponement was not a means of trying to disenfranchise eligible voters ahead of the 2015 general elections.
