Kano: Borno IDPs Reject Sheriff At APC Event

Date:

Members of the Borno IDPs Welfare Association in Kano have asked the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council to reconsider the planned presence of former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, at a campaign event scheduled for Saturday in Kano.

The association made the appeal in a letter dated September 4, 2026, addressed to the Director General of the Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulazeez Yari.

The group said it remained committed to the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the success of the APC, but expressed concern over Sheriff’s reported participation in the event.

According to the association, many of its members who were displaced from Borno by the insurgency still carry painful memories of the crisis, making Sheriff’s appearance at an APC platform particularly distressing.

“We respectfully urge the Council to reconsider his involvement in this specific event,” the group said.

It said Sheriff’s presence could evoke painful memories among displaced persons who fled Borno for Kano and potentially distract from the campaign’s message of unity and hope.

The association also warned that his participation could alienate some members of the displaced community who are willing to support the APC presidential ticket.

The group, however, stressed that its objection was specifically to Sheriff’s presence at the event and not to President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“We are fully committed to the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the broader APC platform, and our community is actively mobilising to ensure a strong showing at the polls,” it said.

The association appealed to Yari to intervene, saying it had confidence in his leadership and commitment to a smooth campaign.

Sheriff, a former national chairman of the APC, has previously denied allegations linking him to Boko Haram, describing them as unfounded.
