Kano govt offers scholarship to 100 indigent students in Ogun

Date:

The Kano State Government on Sunday said it gave scholarship to 100 indigent students to study first degree programmes at the Bell University, Ota, Ogun.

The Deputy Director, Ministry of Education, Mr Musa Gambo, disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota.

Gambo stated that the scholarship would cost the state government N120 million annually.

“The scholarship is based on merit, because various universities were invited to conduct test for the students and only those that passed the test were given scholarship,” he said.

According to him, the scholarship becomes imperative because all the institutions in the state cannot absorb all the students seeking admission.

Gambo added that the government had undergraduate students in other three private universities: Crescent University, Ogun; American University of Nigeria, Yola, and Igbinedion University, Benin City, Edo.

“The undergraduate students in all the four private universities were performing up to expectation of the Kano State Government because they are one of the best students in their various departments,” he said.

Gambo said that the state government was working toward enlightening its students on the need for them to shun the lure to join members of the insurgency.

He also called on them to join hands with the government in tackling insurgency in the area.

“An educated person will be difficult to be convinced to join Boko Haram, because he or she is enlightened to know what is wrong and what is right,” said the deputy director. (NAN)
