The Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change has revealed that applications are now open for communities in need of boreholes across the Greater Kano.
The Commissioner, Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, in a statement on Thursday said the initiative is to provide immediate relief as waterworks rehabilitation is ongoing.
According to Hashim, the initiative forms part of the solar-powered boreholes approved by the state’s governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf to deliver 4,140,000 liters of water daily, “as part of the administration’s commitment to improving access to clean and safe water for the people of Kano”.
Dr. Hashim explained that while the government continues to implement long-term solutions through the ongoing rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, Challawa Water Treatment Plant, and the Goron Dutse Water Reservoir Complex, “it is also necessary to provide short-term interventions to communities experiencing acute water shortages with 166 approved solar-powered boreholes.”
He noted that the rehabilitation works on the critical water infrastructure projects are progressing steadily and are expected to be fully completed within eight months of their commencement, after which they will significantly improve water supply across Kano metropolis and surrounding areas.
The Commissioner therefore called on community members, community leaders, and other stakeholders to apply through the official borehole application platform provided by the Ministry. The information collected will help the Ministry identify and prioritize communities with the greatest need.
He explained further that applicants are required to provide basic information, including their names, contact details, local government areas, wards, community names, the availability of existing functional boreholes, and the estimated number of beneficiaries. The form will be available on the official website of the Ministry via https://kanowaterproject.com.
“The Kano State Government remains committed to ensuring equitable access to water resources and delivering sustainable solutions that improve the welfare and quality of life of all residents.
“The Ministry encourages eligible communities to submit their applications promptly,” the statement added.
