Kano state Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on Saturday at exactly 12:15 casted his vote at Kwankwaso Malamai ward for the state Local Government Election.
Speaking immediately after the vote at Kwankwaso Malamai Primary School, the governor said that all the reports he received showed that the election has been very peaceful.
“The report I am receiving so far shows clearly that people across the state came out en mass since morning to cast their vote” said Kwankwaso, adding that “we have few cases that are not the best in some of the wards, but I believe on the whole we can congratulate ourselves.”
“We are very happy that the election is taking place. The last time we had Local Government Election in Kano was in 2007, seven years now, we are conducting another, and I believe this will enhance and strengthen our democracy,” the governor emphasised.
He appealed to whoever has complaints to lodge it in a proper way as Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) Law has an in built procedure of addressing grievances.
Meanwhile, executives and members of States Independent Electoral Commission Forum have paid a courtesy call on Gov. Kwankwaso immediately after monitoring the election across the state.
The governor told them that he planned to conduct the state local government election during his first year in office, however due to the violent attack in the state that resulted in the death of 185 people in one day, the atmosphere became difficult for election to be organised.
He said since the state is peaceful now, it became necessary for the election to be conducted, adding that all logistics and other forms of support to the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has been provided by his by administration in order to conduct free and fair election.
Earlier speaking, the forum Secretary, Dr. Hannatu U. Binyat who is also the chairperson of Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission, said that they have monitored the election and observed that the electorates have turned out en mass to cast their vote, adding that they have also seen so many female voters exercising their civic rights of casting their votes at various polling units.
Dr. Hannatu said that they are very proud of Governor Kwankwaso for conducting the election, noting that in the North west zone, only Katsina state is yet to conduct Local Government Election, adding that council’s elections adds value to nations’ democracy.
