‎Kano State has recorded a historic leap in Nigeria’s 2025 Sub-national Climate Governance Performance Ranking, with a quantum rise from the 35th position it placed last year to an impressive 4th place in the 2025 ranking.

A statement by the governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin indicates that the latest rating marks one of the most remarkable improvements ever achieved by any state in the country’s climate governance history.

‎According to Dawakin, this performance is the direct outcome of the visionary leadership of the governor of Kano state, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.

‎He said Governor Yusuf has made environmental sustainability and climate resilience a central pillar of his administration’s development agenda, with the implementation of wide-ranging reforms and initiatives designed to protect the environment, promote renewable energy, and strengthen climate adaptation across the state.

‎”These include the Kano State Climate Change Policy, the deployment of renewable energy in public institutions, urban greening and beautification projects under the Urban Renewal Programme, as well as large-scale afforestation and erosion control interventions”.

‎The Governor who was represented at the official unveiling of the 2025 ranking in Abuja, by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, said the recognition underscores the state’s steadfast commitment to sustainable development and responsible environmental management.

‎At the event, Samantha Harrison, First Secretary, Climate Diplomacy – British High Commission, Abuja, presented the certificate of recognition to the Kano State Government in acknowledgment of its outstanding progress in climate governance.

‎Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Department of Climate Change for their continuous partnership and leadership in strengthening sub-national climate governance.
