Political tension is rising in Kano North Senatorial District as key stakeholders have drawn a hard line against what they describe as attempts to impose candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
Chairman of the Kano North Political Stakeholders Forum, Aliyu Abbas Gumawa, declared that the district will resist any form of political “experimentation,” warning that only candidates with genuine grassroots backing will be accepted.
In a statement issued on Monday, Gumawa specifically faulted the recent political moves by former Minister of State for Housing, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, describing his ambition as disconnected from the realities and aspirations of the people.
According to him, consultations across the district showed that the move lacks local support and cannot be taken as a reflection of the electorate’s will.
He also questioned the credibility of Gwarzo’s declaration event, alleging that it was dominated by political actors from outside the constituency, thereby undermining its legitimacy.
“It is our considered view that the event does not reflect the realities of electoral strength within Kano North and cannot be used as a measure of popular support,” he said.
Gumawa raised alarm over what he termed increasing external interference in the district’s political affairs, warning that such actions could destabilise the area and erode democratic values.
“Kano North is not available for political experimentation or imposed candidacies,” he stressed, adding that any attempt to sideline the people’s choice would be firmly resisted.
The stakeholders’ forum called on political actors to respect the wishes of the electorate and avoid heating up the polity, insisting that voters must be allowed to decide based on trust and performance.
Gumawa also reaffirmed support for the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, describing him as a tested and result-oriented representative whose track record continues to command widespread backing across the district.
The development underscores growing intra-party tensions in Kano, as competing interests begin to position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
