Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi has called for a review of the sharing formula of federal allocations to meet the democratic needs of citizens.
Idris also called for a critical look at the issue of the establishment of the Police to be managed by state governments across the federation.
In an interview with newsmen on Friday in Abuja, Idris said the revenue sharing formula was lopsided in favour of the federal government to the detriment of the states.
He said the three arms of government have responsibilities to people that elected them, adding that one arm should not therefore take a proportion that is of disadvantage to the rest.
“A situation where the federal government takes 55 per cent of the total share of the revenue was to say the least unfair. We must look at the formula in order to meet our campaign promises to our citizens.
“When you look at it, the states and local governments are the closest to the people and most of challenges faced directly by citizens are handled by the states and local governments,” Idris said.
Revenue among the three arms of government is shared in accordance with the vertical formula, as determined by Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission and approved by the National Assembly.
The formula allocates 52.68%, 26.72% and 20.60% to the Federal, State and Local Governments, respectively.
Revenue allocation refers to the mechanism for sharing the country’s financial resources, with the overall objective of enhancing economic growth and development, minimising inter-governmental tensions and promoting national unity. He asserted this when the General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigeria Army, Major General Mayirenso Saraso formally handed over 131 Children of the released 137 school children of Kuriga school in Chikun Local Government Area of the state.
According to him when the people of the state are busy celebrating the release of the children unhurt. th conflict merchants are busy conspiring to scuttle the joy and celebration mood of the people.
He therefore vowed to not allow them to succeed in their nefarious activities.
Gov. Sani stressed that since the return of the students, some mischief makers have been asking questions about how these children were released and what happened.
He opined that that is irrelevant to the people because what matters is that the children are back.
“For us in Kaduna, what is more, important to us is the safe return of our children. Today, the children are here they will soon join their parents, and families who are more important as our role is to protect the lives and citizens of the state under my government
He said that security is number one on our own because it is not politics, we have to be cautious, and we should not politicise security issues in Nigeria, because any attempt to undermine the security in Nigeria in the name of politics will jeopardise the lives of citizens.
Gov. Sani charged securities operatives to be vigilant and ensure that anybody who will identify as an informant should be reported.
In his remarks, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigeria Army, Major General Mayirenso Saraso said both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches were adopted in the rescue operation of the children.
He recalls that on Thursday, 7th March 2024, some Violent Extremists and Insurgents infamously called armed bandits invaded the LEA Primary School and the Government Secondary School both co-located at Kuriga, in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where they criminally abducted several pupils and students including a staff member of one of the two schools.
According to him, the sustained and coordinated application of both kinetic and non-kinetic efforts by the security agencies under the strategic guidance of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR through the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
