LASG closes 7 firms over non-remittance of N26.5m tax

Date:

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) says it has closed seven more companies over unremitted taxes to the tune of N26.5 million. Mrs Folasade Coker-Afolayan, Head of the Distrain Unit of the LIRS, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the weekend in Lagos that the companies were closed on Tuesday.

She said that they were shut during a state-wide tax law enforcement operation for not remitting personal income taxes of their workers amounting to N26.5 million.

According to her, the affected companies’ tax liabilities cover periods ranging from one to two years.

Coker-Afolayan said that the enforcement would continue until taxpayers imbibed the culture of voluntary payment of their taxes.

She said that tax payment was a civic responsibility of every citizen and reiterated that tax evasion was a crime.

“Tax payment is a civic responsibility of everyone because that is the only way government can provide the necessary infrastructure for citizens and also improve their standard of living,” she said.

Coker-Afolayan urged taxpayers to remit their taxes promptly to avoid having their premises shut.

NAN reports that the LIRS sealed 72 companies in the first quarter of the year for failure to remit N552.6 million income taxes of workers to the state government. (NAN)
