Lecturer advises Muslims on benefits of memorising Qur’an

A lecturer in the Department of Islamic Studies, Federal University Dutsin-ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State, Sheikh Hayatu Umar, has advised Muslims to endevour to memorise the Holy Qur’an because of its huge benefits in this world and the hereafter.

Sheikh Umar said Allah has promised to raise the status of those who memorise the Qur-an as such Muslims should strive for this immense favours.

The lecturer said this on Monday in Dutsin-ma at the inauguration of pioneer students of the College of Qur’an and Qira’at.

The college was established solely for the memorisation of the Qur’an via set Islamic guidelines linked to Prophet Muhammad.

He qouted Imam Ibn al-Jazriy as saying: “A status of a person is not raised except by what he memorised and knows from the Quran…”

The lecturer explained that Islam describes those who hold on  the Holy Book as noble and righteous people amongst mankind.

Sheikh Umar, who is also among instructors in the college, said Prophet Muhammad has been reported to have unequivocally said the best amongst his followers are those who learned the Qur’an and teaches others.

He therefore urged every Muslim to aspire to memorise the Holy Qur’an using any of the 10 recognised recitation methods, which he said are equal in reward.

Another renowned scholar of Qira’at, Sheikh Muhsin Abdullahi, explained that those who took dictation  from the Prophet as the Qur’an was revealed, such as Zaid Ibn Thabit, recorded the Qur’an in different dialects of the Arabs.

Abdullahi said that the wisdom behind that was to enable Muslims read Qur’an with ease.

The Director of the college, Dr Gaddafi Sani, said the school was opened to provide students to have sound memorisation of the Qur’an through different methods of recitation.

He said that the students were from the state and outside, adding that qualified teachers in the field of Qur’anic recitation and exegesis have been engaged to guide the students.

In his remarks, the institution’s registrar, Malam Suleiman Abdullahi, said that the school has a section for the memorisation of Qur’an where those who memorized at least one-third of the whole Qur’an are admitted, and spend one year to complete the memorization.

He added that there is also a six months certificate course and a two year diploma course on Qur’an memorisation.

Both the Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Kabir Abdussalam-Shema and the District Head of Dutsin-ma, Alhaji Sada Muhammad-Sada, in their separate goodwill messages, pledged more support for the the institution to achieve its objective.
