The Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has condemned the explosion that occurred in parts of Maiduguri on Monday evening, describing it as a “despicable” and “cowardly” act targeting innocent civilians during the holy month of Ramadan.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, the governor, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj (Umrah), called on residents to remain calm and maintain heightened vigilance, especially in places of worship and other public spaces as the festive period approaches.
Zulum expressed sympathy with victims of the incident, saying he was deeply saddened by the explosions and extended his thoughts and prayers to the families of those affected. He described the act as “utterly condemnable, barbaric and inhumane.”
The governor attributed the recent increase in attacks to ongoing military operations in the Sambisa Forest and other suspected insurgent hideouts.
He, however, assured residents that security agencies are in control of the situation and have put in place measures to prevent further incidents in Maiduguri and other parts of the state.
Zulum urged the public to go about their lawful activities while remaining vigilant and cooperating with security agencies by reporting any suspicious movements.
