Tragedy struck last Saturday, when three students of Kanta Unity Secondary School, in Argungu local government area of Kebbi state, allegedly died of high malaria fever.

Investigations showed that one of the students was from Katsina state while the other two were from Kebbi state.

Confirming the incident to People’s Daily yesterday, the Commissioner of Education, Abdulmumin Samaila Kamba said when news of the incident was reported to him, he quickly liaised with the health ministry, which dispatched a team of health personnel to the school to investigate the matter while some students who were also being threatened by the disease were hospitalised.

‘’ 3 students lost their lives, one from Katsina and two from Kebbi. We did not know the cause of their death at the initial stage, until the health personnel from the ministry, and Doctors without Borders confirmed that they died as a result of ‘high malaria.

“They are still carrying out further medical investigation in the school while those on admission are responding to treatment, and others have been discharged’’, he said.

When People’s Daily visited the school, it was discovered that normal lessons were in progress though it was glaring that news of the death of the students had affected the mood of both the students and staff of the school.
