Man kills wife over bush meat in Taraba

Ambrose Anthony, of Mararraban Boli village, Pantisawa, in Yorro local government area of Taraba state has been charged for allegedly killing his wife over bush meat, before a Jalingo Chief Magistrate Court.

According to First Information Report (FIR), the accused was alleged to have hit his wife, Helen, with firewood on her abdomen on the seventh of last month, over the bush meat the accused bought from a village market, which led to the quarrel that made him inflict injury on his wife that led to her death in the hospital.

The accused has been charged for culpable homicide, under section 221, punishable by death and as the FIR was read on the request of the Police prosecutor, the presiding Magistrate Victoria Barnabas did not take the plea of the accused.

She said that her court lacks jurisdiction on the case but was only conducting remand proceeding for the High Court pending the release of he legal advice from the Ministry of Justice.

The Police Prosecutor informed the court that investigation on the case was still in progress and prayed the court to adjourn the case.

Barnabas granted his prayers and adjourned the case to twentieth of this month and ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody.

Meanwhile, a house wife Zainab Sani, of Mafindi ward, Jalingo has been arraigned before a Jalingo Area Court 2, for causing hurt to her husband.

According to the FIR, it was alleged that the complainant, Sani Garba pleaded with his wife to be patient over the three thousand naira she demanded but instead, she took a knife and stabbed her husband in the stomach and chest; as a result, the complainant sustained injury, contrary to section 245 of the Penal Code.

The Police Prosecutor, Ethiopian Mengur prayed the court to read out the FIR to the accused and the presiding judge, Musa Iliya Chafini granted the prayers.

The accused admitted the allegation and pleaded guilty.

However, the Police Prosecutor informed the court that the complainant, Sani Garba was still hospitalised over the injury he sustained and prayed the court to adjourn the case for hearing.

The judge, Musa Chafini granted his prayers and adjourned the case to fifteenth of this month and ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody.
