Military trains NEMA on oil spill simulation

The Nigerian military yesterday said it is training National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other stakeholders in disaster management on oil spill simulation exercise.

The exercise Oil Spill Code named ADAH ISONG” was held at the Armed forces simulation centre ( AFSC) Jaji, Kaduna.

Speaking at the event, NEMA’s Director-General, Alhaji Sani Sidi said NEMA’s vision is to build a culture of Preparedness, response, mitigation and community resilience to disasters in Nigeria.

According to him, it’s an exercise to stimulate response preparedness to oil Spill.

“ The scenario in this exercise is set against the backdrop of incessant spillage, its attendance consequence and indeed the security situation in the Delta region which escalate to a worst case of a major oil spill disasters,” he said.

The DG represented by NEMA’s Head of Simulation, Basharu Ibrahim further explained that Nigeria is passing through a phase in its national development which has brought it to witnessed complex potential natural and human hazards such as terrorism, Civil, unrest, floods, collapse building and oil spill.

He stated that confronting these challenges requires concerted efforts and active collaboration between all emergency service providers both at local and national levels in order to strengthen preparedness and ensure timely and effective response whenever such challenges arise.
